The Transit is the van we recommend most often to customers who want real capability without Sprinter-level pricing. You get AWD. You get east-west sleeping without a flare kit. You get a full-size bed out of the box. And critically — you can get it serviced at any Ford dealership in the country.

It's not perfect. Resale trails the Sprinter. The gas engine doesn't have the same 500,000-mile ceiling that a well-maintained diesel does. The interior feels less premium than a Mercedes. But for 90% of the capability at 75% of the cost, the Transit is a remarkably pragmatic choice.

01 — Why Transit

The Pragmatic
Choice.

A new 2WD Transit 148 medium-roof cargo starts around $51,500. A Transit 148 high-roof with AWD lands in the $58K-$65K range fully loaded. That's $8,000-$15,000 less than an equivalently-configured Sprinter — and that's not a trivial sum when you're already committing to a $100K+ conversion.

What makes the Transit the right choice for most buyers:

  • Best value in the segment. AWD capability, modern gas engines, and full-size interior for meaningfully less money than the Sprinter.
  • AWD at a real price. Ford's Intelligent AWD adds about $7,000-$10,000 — substantially cheaper than the Sprinter's AWD option, and plenty capable for snow, light dirt roads, and bad weather.
  • East-west sleeping fits standard. A 74" east-west bed drops in without a flare kit. On a Sprinter you either sleep at 68" or pay $4,500+ for the Flare System. This alone saves real money.
  • Service anywhere. Roughly 3,000 Ford dealers nationwide vs. 280 Sprinter service centers. If something goes wrong in rural Wyoming or coastal Maine, you're covered.
  • Ford parts are everywhere. Oil, filters, sensors, common wear parts — sourced quickly and affordably at any auto parts store.
  • Modern driving characteristics. The 3.5L EcoBoost V6 is responsive and refined. It's not a Sprinter on the highway, but it's closer than most expect.
If budget is a real consideration, the Transit is almost always the answer. It's what we'd put our own family in — full capability, real service support, and you're not paying for a three-pointed star you don't strictly need.
02 — Wheelbase

Choosing Between the
148 and 148 EXT.

Unlike the Sprinter, the Transit offers only one wheelbase relevant to conversions — the 148. But it comes in two body lengths: standard and extended. The extended variant adds interior space behind the rear axle without changing the wheelbase itself, which means the drivability stays the same but you get more room inside.

Transit 148 EXT

~12' 10" Interior · 22.0 ft Overall
  • Same wheelbase — same drivability
  • North-South sleeping at 75" available
  • Unlocks dedicated shower room
  • Larger galley configurations
  • Best for families and extended travel

Extended wheelbase adds $4,500 to either a Scout or Loft build. For buyers who want more interior space without a longer overall footprint to park, the Transit EXT is a sweet spot.

05 — FAQ

Questions About
Transit Builds.

What's the realistic total cost of a finished Transit camper van?

A mid-configured Loft build on a Transit 148 EXT with Heat+AC and Adventure Power lands around $131,000 for the conversion. Add a new Transit chassis ($52K-$65K depending on AWD) and you're at a total project investment of $183,000-$196,000. A simpler Scout 148 configuration typically comes in at $120,000-$135,000 all in — the best value proposition in the segment.

Should I get a standard 148 or the 148 Extended?

The 148 Extended is a sweet spot because the wheelbase is identical — so drivability doesn't change — but you get 2.5 additional feet of interior length. If you want a shower room, North-South sleeping, or larger galley space, the Extended is worth the $4,500 upgrade.

Is the Transit AWD system any good?

Ford's Intelligent AWD system is well-regarded for year-round traction on snow, wet roads, and light dirt. It's not designed for serious off-road use the way the Sprinter AWD is, but for most buyers that distinction doesn't matter. It costs $7,000-$10,000 on top of a 2WD Transit.

How long will a Transit last?

With consistent maintenance, the 3.5L gas engines routinely see 200,000-300,000 miles. Well-maintained examples have crossed 400,000. The Transit doesn't have the 500K+ ceiling of a diesel Sprinter, but most owners don't keep vehicles that long anyway.

Where can I get a Transit serviced while traveling?

Anywhere. There are approximately 3,000 Ford dealerships in the United States, plus thousands of independent shops that handle Ford vehicles. Parts are commonly stocked and inexpensive. This is the Transit's single biggest practical advantage.

Gas vs. diesel — which is the better choice?

Gas is the right choice for most buyers. Diesel has a longevity advantage and better fuel economy, but the Transit's gas engine is meaningfully cheaper to maintain, simpler to service, and doesn't require DEF fluid or particulate filter maintenance.

Can you help me find a Transit to convert?

Yes. Transits are generally more available than Sprinters, so sourcing is typically faster. Use our Van Dealer Finder or book a call.

How long is the build process?

4-6 months from build slot start to delivery. A $10,000 deposit holds your slot. Every build includes a full orientation at delivery and a 3-year structural warranty.
